The Tool For Literacy

Children are always amazed by the simplest of things. This girl is so adorable with her pen! What's more amazing to me is, even though Bhutan is one of the happiest countries in the world, there is still a struggle with literacy going on. According to the most recent numbers by UNICEF, the total adult literacy rate in Bhutan is 52.8% (2008-2012).

Through various initiatives and programs, this is actually a significant achievement considering that overall estimates in the 90s put the literacy rate at 10-30%. Youth are faring better putting the literacy rates at 68-80%, but women in general seem to have less opportunity for education as their literacy rate trails men.
