Driving through central Mongolia while sick and tired was a bit rough at times, but at least this was one of the few times while on a paved road. I had to struggle to stay awake to see all the beauty the Great Mongolian Steppe has to offer. I would doze off and then be suddenly jolted awake when I would bump my head into the window of the SUV while on bumpy dirt roads. Not ideal, but occasionally we would take a little roadside break, and I would shoot landscapes that looked like this.
The vastness of this once mighty nation evokes thoughts of hordes of horseback warriors preparing to launch their next assault. The occasional ger or two doting the landscape only serving to reinforce the nomadic lifestyle that has carried on here for centuries. This is a man's man land. The main festival in Mongolia, Naadam is literally "the three games of men." Mongolian wrestling, horse racing, and archery. Football? Basketball? Baseball? That's cute.
