Walking through the Gadong night market in Bandar Seri Bagawan. At $1 Brunei Dollar a meal, this was < $0.80 USD at the time. How often can you eat a meal for that cheap?! Now, no guarantees that the quality is up there at these prices, but still, impressive.
If you travel to other areas in Southeast Asia, I think you can find similar 'deals.' Certainly when I visited Cambodia I was told of the $1 meals street vendors sell, but it goes mostly to factory workers who work long hours and don't have much pay, so you can imagine the quality is not exactly great. Many of the stalls at the night market had good food, of which I consumed as I pleased. Meat on a stick? Yes, please.
